As
the federal government retreats further every day from our nation's
environmental laws, actions at the state and local level are
increasingly important to protect the health and safety of our
families. Visit our Legislative
Action home page to learn more about the issues we are working on
in the state house.
- Bottle Bill Update
- We're working to extend our state's most effective recycling
program to include water, sports drinks, flavored teas, and other
on-the-go beverages.
- E-Waste - The Electronics Take-Back bill requires brand
owners of computers and TVs sold in this jurisdiction to pay for the
costs of managing their discarded products. Twenty-two states have a
similar law.
- Learning from
Nantucket – Recycling rates in Massachusetts cities and
towns vary from below 20% to an impressive 90% for Nantucket.
Nantucket achieved this outstanding result through implementation of
an advanced solid waste disposal program that includes the
traditional recycling of paper products, plastic, metal and glass,
with the more challenging and nontraditional recycling of items such
as tires, clothing, mattresses, furniture and even large home
appliances like refrigerators and stoves. Their facility also
recycles construction and demolition waste and processes
biodegradable household and yard waste to produce compost.
Zero Waste
A design principle and planning approach for the environmental
management of resources. It aims to prevent waste by design
rather than manage it after the fact. The Sierra Club's Zero Waste
policy addresses not only the quantity of waste we generate, but also
its toxicity, its contribution to climate change, and the important
links between waste reduction and corporate responsibility.

- Massachusetts Waste
and Recycling – The Massachusetts Department of Environmental
Protection is committed to maximizing waste reduction, recycling and
composting. As part of these efforts they provide extensive
information on environmentally sound options for disposing of almost
any imaginable type of waste.
