On July 12, braving torrential rains, 1,100 interested citizens
packed MIT's Kresge Auditorium to learn where Massachusetts'
gubernatorial candidates stand on environment and conservation issues.

The
event, sponsored by the Massachusetts Sierra Club, the Massachusetts
League of Environmental Voters, the Environmental League of
Massachusetts, and the Appalachian Mountain Club, drew a slew of
candidates including Democrats Chris Gabrieli and Deval Patrick,
Independent Christy Mihos and Green-Rainbow candidate Grace Ross.
Supporting organizations also include Alternatives for Community and
Environment ACE, Berkshire Environmental Action Team, Boston Natural
Areas Network, Charles River Watershed Association, Clean Water Action –
MA, Climate Change Action Brookline, Coalition on the Environment and
Jewish Life, Conservation and Recreation Campaign, Conservation Law
Foundation, Environmental Business Council, Environmental Defense,
Friends of the Blue Hills, Friends of the Middlesex Fells, Island
Alliance, Massachusetts Land Trust Coalition, Massachusetts Smart Growth
Alliance, MassAudubon, MassBike, MassPIRG, Metropolitan Area Planning
Council, New England Mountain Bike Association, Roots & Shoots, Safer
Waters in Massachusetts, Save the Harbor/Save the Bay, Trustees of
Reservations, WalkBoston.
Candidates present: Chris Gabrieli (D) Christy Mihos (I) Deval
Patrick (D) Grace Ross (G). Democrat Tom Reilly had originally agreed to
participate in the forum, but was forced to cancel due to obligations as
Attorney General related to the Big Dig. Kerry Healey was invited but
declined to attend.
The forum was moderated by Steve Curwood of National Public Radio's
Living On Earth radio program and media panel questioners included Beth
Daley, Boston Globe, Jon Brodkin, MetroWest Daily News, and John
Monahan, Worcester Telegram & Gazette.
Held at Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Kresge Auditorium,
the forum covered such diverse environmental topics as global warming,
energy, transportation alternatives, toxics and health, and funding for
parks.
